Introduction to Ceramic Coatings

Back in 1994, NASA rolled out ceramic coatings for spacecraft. Initially meant just for ceramic materials, it turned out they had a broader range of uses. Who knew? This discovery has opened new possibilities, highlighting NASA’s knack for innovation. But like many other discoveries or initial uses, ceramic coating technology found a home in commercial industries.

The turn of the century marked a rapid acceleration in nanotechnology. And one of the first real-world applications was to incorporate nanotech with ceramic coatings. The initial applications were used for marine cargo container ships – and other oceanic applications. Eventually, chemists found a way to tweak their formulas to bond to automotive clear coatings.

This is where the nanoceramic coatings we know of today took off. Growing companies like Feynlab, Progressive Products, and NIC Industries (the owners of Cerakote) began to formulate these products for uses in automotive, industrial, and sporting goods applications. But the real explosion didn’t start till 2014, when Ceramic Pro (a brand owned by Nanoshine LTD) hit US shores.

In the mid 2010’s nanoceramic coatings began to take the automotive world by storm, providing a new level of protection and shine that was once only a dream for car owners. Unlike traditional waxes or sealants, ceramic coatings are made from liquid polymer and create a permanent or semi-permanent bond with a vehicle’s paint.

This advanced technology allows for a protective layer that offers superior resistance to environmental hazards. And the professional ceramic coating product that was responsible for raising public awareness was Ceramic Pro’s 9H.

Even in 2024, car enthusiasts are still drawn to ceramic coatings not just for their dazzling appearance but also for their protective qualities. These coatings act as a shield against harmful UV rays, bird droppings, and tree sap—common enemies of car paint.

Today there are ceramic coatings that are sold with ‘lifetime warranties’, some that can instantly heal small scratches simply by adding warm water to the surface. There are even new coating products like Icon Rocklear that boast 100x thickness, can be repaired with paint correction, and serve as that bridge between paint protection film and traditional ceramic coatings.

How Ceramic Coatings Work

Ceramic coatings might sound like magic, but there’s a fascinating science behind their effectiveness. These coatings are composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), which forms a durable yet flexible layer over your car’s paint. This creates a hydrophobic surface, meaning water and other liquids will bead up and roll off, taking dirt and grime along with them.

The magic of ceramic coatings lies in their ability to chemically bond with the car’s paint – or other materials – like plastic trim, automotive glass, even high-end interior leather. This bond forms a strong and resilient layer that is resistant to scratches, oxidation, and chemical contaminants.

Unlike traditional waxes, which sit on top of the paint, ceramic coatings become part of your car’s surface, providing long-lasting protection.

What’s more, ceramic coatings are known for their impressive gloss and shine. The smooth surface created by the coating reflects light more effectively, giving your car a showroom-worthy finish. Whether you’re looking to protect a brand-new vehicle or enhance the appearance of an older one, ceramic coatings offer a level of protection and shine that is hard to beat.

Key Advantages for Car Owners

For car enthusiasts the benefits of ceramic coatings extend far beyond just aesthetics. One of the most significant advantages is enhanced durability. Ceramic coatings provide a tough shield that can withstand the rigors of daily driving, including exposure to harsh weather conditions and road debris.

Another major perk is the ease of cleaning. Thanks to their hydrophobic properties, ceramic coatings repel dirt, dust, and grime, making it much easier to maintain a clean and polished appearance. Say goodbye to labor-intensive car washes and hello to a vehicle that stays cleaner for longer.

Lastly, ceramic coatings protect your car from environmental damage. Harmful UV rays, acid rain, and industrial pollutants can wreak havoc on your paint, leading to fading and corrosion. With a ceramic coating, your car is safeguarded against these elements, preserving its value and beauty over time.

Where Do Ceramic Coatings Fall Short?

So – we’ve introduced coating benefits – but what about their limitations? It’s important to first note that many of the falsehoods you’ve learned about ceramic coatings are mainly attributed to marketing and advertising ‘experts’ who have pushed ‘ethical business practices’ to the edge of the envelope.

Here are some of the misleading statements made about coatings.

  1. Ceramic coatings are fireproof. This one is based on an old online video from a leading product manufacturer that showed them lighting a hood on fire, quickly extinguishing it, then buffing off the fire residue. If your car ignites for some reason, a ceramic coating is not going to prevent it from burning.
  2. Ceramic coatings are scratch proof. Not true at all. In fact, coatings are easy to scratch if you don’t use the right car washing techniques and products. What coatings do is protect the original surface from scratching. But this again has limitations.
  3. Ceramic coatings prevent rock chips. Another flat-out falsehood. The thickest current coating measures 5 microns. One micron is equivalent to one one-thousandth of a millimeter. For a practical example – human hair ranges from 50 to 150 microns in thickness.
  4. Ceramic coatings prevent water spots. Nope – not true. Water contains minerals – like calcium. When it dries on any surface, those minerals stick to the surface – even a slick hydrophobic coating. While high-quality coatings make water sheet off, it’s still possible for water spotting to occur and etch into the coated surface.

The Application Process

Applying a ceramic coating is a meticulous process that demands attention to detail, and it’s often best left to the professionals. The first step in the application process is thorough preparation. This involves washing and decontaminating the car’s surface to remove any existing dirt, grime, or wax.

Once the car is completely clean, paint correction or polishing the surface is the next crucial step. A ceramic coating is going to amplify the condition of the surface where it’s applied. So, if there are small scratches and other imperfections, paint correction will remove them.

Correction not only ensures that the coated car will look visually stunning, but it also helps the coating bond to the surface better.

Once the surface is pristine, the ceramic coating can be applied. This is typically done in small sections using a specialized applicator pad. The coating must be allowed to cure for a set period, during which it bonds with the paint to form a protective layer.

Finally, the excess product is buffed off to reveal a brilliant shine. It’s important to note that proper curing times and application techniques are crucial for achieving optimal results, which is why many car owners choose to have a professional handle the process.

Myths vs. Facts

With the growing popularity of ceramic coatings, several myths have surfaced that can mislead car owners. One common misconception is that ceramic coatings are scratch proof. While they do offer excellent resistance to minor scratches, they’re not invincible and won’t protect against deeper damage.

Another myth is that ceramic coatings eliminate the need for regular car maintenance. While they do make cleaning easier, regular washing and care are still necessary to keep your car in pristine condition.

Lastly, some believe that all ceramic coatings are the same. In truth, quality and performance can vary significantly between products. It’s essential to do your research and choose a reputable brand that meets your specific needs.

Choosing the Right Ceramic Coating

When it comes to selecting ceramic coating, several factors should be considered. First, assess the level of protection you desire. Some coatings are designed for maximum durability, while others prioritize ease of application and affordability. But it’s also crucial to understand their limitations.

If you’re trying to protect your car, truck, or SUV from road debris, paint chips, and other damage – then you should seriously consider paint protection film – first.

Next, consider the reputation of the brand and the experiences of other users. Customer reviews and expert recommendations can provide valuable insights into the performance and reliability of different products.

Finally, think about your budget and the level of maintenance you’re willing to commit to. While professional-grade coatings offer top-tier protection, they may require a greater investment than DIY options. Ultimately, the right ceramic coating will depend on your vehicle’s needs and your personal preferences.

Maintenance Tips

To prolong the life and effectiveness of your ceramic coating, proper maintenance is key. Regular washing with a pH-balanced car shampoo will help preserve the hydrophobic properties of the coating and prevent dirt buildup.

Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can damage the coating. Instead, opt for gentle cleaning tools like microfiber cloths and mitts. These will help protect the coating while effectively removing dirt and grime.

Lastly, consider applying a maintenance spray or topper every few months. These products can enhance the coating’s performance and restore its shine, ensuring your vehicle continues to turn heads for years to come.

The Future of Ceramic Coatings

As technology continues to advance, the future of ceramic coatings looks brighter than ever. New formulations are being developed that offer even greater levels of protection and longevity, making them a valuable investment for car enthusiasts.

In addition, research is ongoing into self-healing coatings that can repair minor scratches and imperfections on their own. While still in the experimental stage, these innovations have the potential to revolutionize the way we protect and maintain our vehicles.

With the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly products, ceramic coatings that reduce environmental impact are also gaining traction. These advancements will likely shape the future of the industry, offering car owners more options and benefits than ever before.

One ceramic coating that currently holds a competitive advantage is Ceramic Pro’s ION Coating system. This is a two-component coating system that includes the application of ION basecoat – and ION topcoat.

As the second layer is applied, positively charged IONs are shared between the two coatings. This forms a single, thicker coating layer – that provides improved depth and shine of paint, exceptional hydrophobic properties – and a longer lasting installation.

With regards to the future – one product that is raising some eyebrows is the aforementioned Icon Rocklear coating. It’s a self-level coating product, that can fill minor scratches and swirls – without paint correction required.

Most ceramic coatings – even the thickest ones – are no more than 3 to 4 microns thick. Icon Rocklear’s coating measures 2.5 MILS in depth – which is more than 100 times thicker. It’s also a coating that can be fixed – if major scratches occur.

While this product is intriguing, it’s just starting to become available in the Southwestern United States.
